Under article 50, the Treaty on the European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union cease to apply in the relevant state from the date of entry into force of a withdrawal agreement, or, failing that, two years after the notification of intention to withdraw, although this period may be extended in certain circumstances.

The Maastricht Treaty on the European Union The Treaty on the European Union (Treaty of Maastricht) came into force in November 1993, after being ratified by the Parliaments of all Member States, and represented the most important step towards European integration after the Single European Act of 19871.
